Computer science is the study of computers and computing, including both hardware and software. The Computer Science Department at Binghamton University, located within the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science, offers bachelor of science, master of science and doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees in computer science, and a master of science degree in information systems.
The bachelor of science in computer science (BSCS) program was officially initiated by the Department in fall 1987. The Bachelor of Science program in Computer Science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET http://www.abet.org The BSCS is among the most popular undergraduate programs at Binghamton University.
The master of science in computer science (MSCS) program was also started in fall 1987 and is the largest master’s degree program at Binghamton University. In fall 2022, an artificial intelligence track and a cybersecurity track will be added to this program.
The PhD in computer science program was started in fall 1999, replacing a PhD degree in advanced technology with a specialization in computer science. Binghamton University is one of four research universities in the State University of New York (SUNY) System and an R1 research institute (a doctoral university with very high research activity). Department faculty members, together with their PhD students, conduct world-class research in a broad spectrum of computer science areas.
